Brisbane giant Clark Keating dominated the 2003 Grand Final and was a key to the Lions’ record-breaking win. Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy believes Matthew Allan can have a similar impact for Essendon this season. ""We are looking forward to getting some hit-outs going our way and let our players set-up so we can get onto the ball first. Much like what Brisbane has done with Clark Keating,"" Sheedy said.

2003
Matthew Allan thought it was time for a change of scenery after struggling with injury at Carlton in recent seasons. He is now motivated and excited about the challenge that lies ahead at Essendon Football Club. After a full pre-season Allan says his body is ready for the rigours of playing in the ruck. That alone is very good news for Essendon supporters.

STRENGTHS
At 198cm tall, the 1999 All Australian ruckman not only brings height to the Essendon line-up but more importantly experience. The 28-year-old has over 130 games to his name, which will be of great benefit to developing youngsters Tristan Cartledge and Jason Laycock. As unusual as it sounds for some that stands 198cm tall, Allan’s mobility and speed are among his greatest assets. In the 3.2km time trial in the pre-season, Allan surprised everyone when he finished in the top 10.

POSITION
The obvious position for Allan is in the ruck. That is where the Carlton best and fairest winner (1999) has played the majority of his football. Allan is looking forward to sharing the ruck duties with Essendon’s number one ruckman David Hille. ""It is an exciting challenge for me at this stage of my career. David is an emerging young talent and I hope I can help him in some small way and fit in and play my part,"" Allan said when arriving at the club last November. Don’t be surprised if Allan also pushes forward on occasions. He has kicked over 70 goals in his career.

2004
After a horror run with injuries over the past few seasons, Matthew Allan will be hoping for an injury free season. If this happens, the sky is the limit for the former Carlton ruckman. He is a proven talent in a position that has posed problems for the bombers in recent seasons. Allan is grateful for a second opportunity at AFL level and is determined to make every post a winner.

WHAT SHEEDY SAYS
""Matthew Allan will be fantastic assistance for David Hille. We have been able to do that quite well over the past five years with John Barnes and Paul Salmon. So having an experienced ruckman around has been essentially important for us. Matthew is an experienced player who has trained very, very well. We are looking forward to getting some hitouts going our way and let our players set-up so we can get onto the ball first. Much like what Brisbane has done with Clark Keating.""
