The veteran of 156 games was a late withdrawal to the Bombers’ side, replaced by Jake Melksham.

General manager of football operations Paul Hamilton said it was extremely disappointing for Welsh, who was eyeing a return to the senior side after undergoing surgery late last year for a groin complaint.

“Initially, we actually replaced [Dustin] Fletcher with Welsh, who had been back and had played three games in the VFL,"" Hamilton told Bomber.tv.

“Unfortunately for him during the warm-up yesterday, he injured his calf muscle and his soleus muscle.

“It’s quite shattering and we really feel for him.”

Hamilton told Bomber.tv Welsh would undergo further examinations to his calf muscle to determine the full extent of the injury.

“Welshy will have additional scans to his calf, but we’re resigned to the fact that he will miss a few games, which is incredibly disappointing for him,” Hamilton said.

Patrick Ryder, who reached his 100-game milestone in yesterday’s victory against the Suns, will be available for selection this weekend despite receiving a heavy knock late in the fourth quarter.

“When he took that big blow we were all thinking this could be our worst nightmare, but he is very fine and the club doctors have given him the all clear. He’ll be ready to go on the weekend which is good news,"" Hamilton said.

In further injury news, wounded duo Jason Winderlich and Courtney Dempsey have been placed on Essendon’s long term injury list after both players underwent successful surgeries on their ruptured ACLs.

“With two long term injuries, it is now a chance for the rookies to come up,” Hamilton said.
“One of the players that will take their place will be Stewart Crameri. Stew is currently on the senior list in place of Anthony Long and if required, this situation allows another rookie to come through.""

""It gives that extra incentive for players to put their hands up and take this opportunity.""
