Essendon recruit Nick O’Brien says his major focus during his first season at AFL level is to improve with every game he plays.
The 18-year-old made his debut for the Bombers in Round One of the NAB Cup on Sunday and admits he has plenty to work on.
“You just want to improve as a young player coming through the system,” O’Brien said.
“There is so much to work on, you are starting behind the pack but there are a lot of good people around me and hopefully I can get better with every game I play.”
O’Brien was one of seven new faces for the Bombers on the weekend and said the recruits would continue to learn from each game they played.
“I thought before the game we were all pretty relaxed,” he said.
“All it is about for us younger guys at the moment is learning, especially at this time of year.
“West Coast came out and they were on fire and more intense than us but it was a good learning curve and took a fair bit out of me.”
O’Brien said there is plenty for the team to work on from the two matches in the opening round of the pre-season competition.
“Regardless of the scoreboard I think the way we played the game wasn’t the way we wanted to play,” O’Brien said.
“The way we have been training certainly wasn’t mirrored today so it was a bit disappointing some of the things we did but we have to look at the positives and look to improve the negatives.”
First round draft selection Elliott Kavanagh is looking forward to the season ahead, following his first game for the club on Sunday. The 18-year-old, who was pick 19 in the national draft, was pleased to be able to get his debut game at AFL level out of the way.
