Essendon had two draft selections in the top 10 in the 1994 National Draft and they made good use of them. With its number four draft selection, the club secured the services of Scott Lucas – premiership player and Best and Fairest winner, and with its second pick, took Blake Caracella, also a premiership player. Gary Moorcroft and Justin Blumfield were two of the other players to be selected by Essendon in the 1994 National Draft.
