Saturday, August 19th will see Essendon play Hawthorn at The Dome. But this will be no ordinary game of football. It is the ‘James Hird Celebration’ game - an evening where Essendon fans will gather as one to celebrate the brilliant career of the club’s greatest living player James Hird. It may yet be the final home game Hird plays in the famous number five.

On the night of the game there will also be a unique photo opportunity. Young Bomber fans wearing the number five guernsey will join their hero for a photo in the middle of The Dome. Click here for more details.

""We still don’t know what James’ is thinking in terms of playing on next season but this will be a great opportunity for Essendon fans to show just how much he has meant to this Club over the past 14 seasons,"" Essendon’s general manager of Marketing, Mark Anderson said today.

""We have a number of activities planned around the game. There will be a highlights package on the big screen, a giant number five Essendon guernsey that covers an entire bay will be unveiled and we will also interview Essendon captain Matthew Lloyd on the ground prior to the match to discuss what it has been like playing alongside Hird.""

The James Hird Celebration game is on element of a range of activities being held by the club to pay tribute to the career of Hird. A function is being held at the Crown Palladium on the Sunday following the game and an extensive memorabilia program has also been established.

Make sure you are at The Dome on Saturday night, August 19th to pay tribute to a legend.
