ESSENDON wingman David Zaharakis doesn't require surgery on his injured left knee but it will keep him from finishing the club's 2010 campaign.

Zaharakis, 20, was helped from the ground during the first quarter of Friday night's 98-point loss to Collingwood at the MCG and took no further part in the game.

General manager of football operations Paul Hamilton said Zaharakis had suffered a grade two strain to his medial ligament.

"With two weeks left in the season, it will obviously keep him out for the remainder of the year," Hamilton told the Essendon website.

"Given the timing of the injury, we expect David to be back at the start of the pre-season so it's unlikely to inhibit him doing a full pre-season."

Zaharakis has played every game for Essendon this season, taking his career tally to 30.

He was recruited with the club's second-round selection (No.23 overall) in the 2008 NAB AFL Draft.
