Richards, who played his junior football with Xavier College and the Sandringham Under 18s, was taken by Essendon with selection 27 in the 2000 draft. He leaves the Bombers having played 33 senior games. Richards, 22, made it clear he wanted to play elsewhere in season 2006 citing a lack of opportunities at senior level.
""We are really pleased to get another first round draft pick for Ted,"" Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy said. ""Ted had nominated Sydney as the club he wanted to go to so he has got what he wanted and we wish him all the best. He has been a really solid citizen around this club since he got here.""
New Bomber Richard Cole has vowed to do everything in his power to repay the faith Essendon Football Club has shown in him. The 22-year-old, who is holidaying in Queensland, yesterday became Essendon first completed trade deal of the week when Collingwood agreed to trade him in exchange for draft selection 23.
