Star of Essendon's 2000 Grand Final victory Justin Blumfield looks set to make his return to the seniors this weekend after an excellent comeback in the Bombers' VFL side on the weekend. Blumfield collected 17 possessions, took seven marks, kicked two goals and was clearly among the Bombers' best players. ""It was a good return,"" Essendon development coach Dean Bailey said. ""He moved well, took some good pack marks and most importantly pulled up very well."" Blumfield was one of a number of experienced players pushing for a return to the senior side.
Gary Moorcroft showed he had been stung by his ommission from the senior side and played an excellent match for the VFL side. Moorcroft collected 26 possessions, went inside 50m on eight occasions and kicked two goals in a very encouraging display. Michael Long completed four quarters for the second consecutive week as he moves towards a return to the seniors. Long had 15 touches but some of his deft touches showed his confidence is returning.
Other players to impress in the VFL included centre half back Aaron Henneman who was dropped from the seniors last week. Henneman worked very hard in the Bombers' defence, effecting five spoils and creating chances for those at ground level. Judd Llaich and david Hille also played well and kept their names in front of selectors.
The VFL side however suffered a disappointing loss and a finals' berth now appears a remote possibility. Go to the VFL drop doen for the full stats and match review.
