""I was hoping to play one game and if I played one game then my goal was to play five games. I have played five games now so hopefully I can play some more before the end of the season. My goal kicking has been a major strength for me this season - I have kicked a few goals this year. In my first game I have kicked five goals - so five games and five goals - so it has been good,"" Harvey said.
In the VFL, Harvey has spent most of his time in the mid-field. Even though he enjoys kicking a goal, in time his ideal position would be in the centre. ""The mid-field is where I would like to play my footy as I get a bit older and develop. I have been told a few times that if I want to play in the mid-field - just watch how Jason Johnson goes and trains and follow him. So I have tried to run as hard as him during training which isn't the easiest thing to do,"" the former Northern Knights player said.
Similar to other 2001 draftee Joel Reynolds, Harvey needs to continue to increase his strength. ""My strength is an area I need to work on. I only weigh 73kg at the moment so I need to work on the weights for a couple of seasons and a bit more fitness and then I should be right hopefully,” said Harvey. Harvey has also taken a lot of advice from the other Harvey at the club – assistant coach Mark. “I probably have had the most to do with Mark Harvey because he is the forward line coach. Harvs is great - he knows when to have a joke and when to be serious. He always helps you out, which is good.”
What Floody says:
Shane Harvey has got great pace and he is a smart footy player. Typical rover, he loves a goal and knows how to kick a goal. As he gets a little bit stronger and a little bit fitter, he will become a good player for the Essendon Football Club over the next few years. He probably has to build up his strength to improve his tackling and the defensive side of his game. I think he will play a forward and mid-field role in years to come.
