2003
Damian Cupido's career is still in its infancy, so it is hard not to get excited about what might lie ahead. Cupido kicked 39 goals in his first season with the Bombers - an excellent return for a young man who arrived at the club with just 13 AFL games under his belt. He spent most of the season playing as a permanent forward but stints on a wing and even off half back show that he might just be more versatile that initially thought.
STRENGTHS
Cupido is definitely the type of player that draws the crowd at the footy. He has the skills that everyone is there to watch – he is exciting, explosive, skillful, classy and polished. Cupido’s electrifying speed and ability to create goals out of nothing make him one of the most exciting players in the competition.
POSITION
Cupido does his best work and is most dangerous in the forwardline. He has the speed and strength to be damaging to opposition teams and has the ability to dominate games. As was demonstrated in 2003, he can win the game off his own boot. Cupido worked in well with gun full forward Matthew Lloyd last season and added much needed forward fire power to the team.
2004
The exciting part of 2004 for Bomber supporters, is that no one knows how good Damian Cupido is. We saw glimpses of brilliance in 2003 but not the whole package. There is no question about Cupido’s talent and ability, he just needs to add consistency to his game and ensure he continues to improve his defensive skills. At just 21-years-old Cupido has an exciting football future ahead of him and is definitely a future star for Essendon.
WHAT SHEEDY SAYS
Damian Cupido was our second highest goal scorer last season and he came into the club and fitted in really quickly. He still has a lot to learn in the game of football in regard to the way the game has to be played in the forwardline and tactically. He is a young player still – he may be 21-years of age but after missing a couple of years of footy with injuries, he hadn’t been on the footy field much prior to coming to Essendon.
