Speaking to media at the club's inaugural Australia Day open training session at Windy Hill (sponsored by Don), the 22-year-old said that the time has come for players to deliver.
""A lot of young guys have gotten games now and are now ready to step up and take it to the next level which is what we need them to do,"" Monfries said.
Having played 72 games with the Bombers, and shown considerable promise in 2008, Monfries is expected to play a key role in Essendon's fortunes this year.
""I will probably play on the half-forward line and pinch-hit in the midfield,"" he said.
""We have really worked on the technical side of our game during pre-season. The preperation you do over summer puts you in a good position for the year ahead and we are just looking forward to the NAB Cup and the season.""
About 2000 fans attended the day which included an autographn session and five players singing the National Anthem.
