Just two short months ago the match-up of Damien Peverill v Andrew McLeod would have been seen as a David v Goliath battle. Even now there is no doubt that Peverill will have his hands full with McLeod at Colonial Stadium tonight. But it isn't the mis-match some would have envisaged eight weeks ago. This will in all likelihood be Peverill's final senior appearance in 2001 before he returns to the rookie list. But he has been sensational in his time in the Essendon senior side and he will be keen to go out on a high note - McLeod will have other ideas. There are some important match-ups tonight - we take a look at three of them.
Damien Peverill v Andrew McLeod
In what is almost certain to be his last game before heading back to the rookie list, Peverill could well get the toughest test in football - a running role with brilliant Adelaide on-baller Andrew McLeod. Peverill has rarely been beaten since graduating to senior ranks but McLeod is in rare form and will keep Peverill working. Peverill has the fitness to run with him - whether he has the experience is another thing. McLeod is an expert at losing tags in heavy traffic. Can he shake the Blanket?
Scott Lucas v Ben Hart
It is hard to know if this match-up will eventuate but Hart is the Crows most experienced key position defender. He creates plenty of run so the Crows would rather keep him at centre half back than on the full back line. Lucas has improved as the season has worn on and his work ethic has been second to none. It will be telling if Lucas can get his hands on the footy and hold some marks early. The less spilled balls across the half back-line, the less Darren Jarman will have to swoop on.
John Barnes v Matthew Clarke
Barnes is returning from injury but is a naturally fit player who will provide a real contest for the Bombers in the middle. Barnes is as mobile as any ruckman going around so Clarke will have his hands full. David Hille has been named on the bench as a back up for Barnes should he begin to tire after missing some football.
