Celebrating the achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, ticketsto this prestigious networking event in Melbourne are now on sale.
The Long Walk is a charity founded by Essendon champion and Indigenousambassador Michael Long. Inspired by hiswalk to Canberra in 2004 to raise awareness of Indigenous issues and to getthem on to the national agenda, The Long Walk today now raises awareness ofhealth, well being and life opportunity in Indigenous communities.
Last week’s second The Long Walk Women’sLuncheon event in Adelaide was held to great success.
Attended by Paul Caica, Minister for Aboriginal Affairs and Reconciliation,guests were welcomed to Kaurna country by Dr Alitya Rigney and heard from localAboriginal women Khatija Thomas, Commissioner for Aboriginal Engagement,groundbreaking playwright, poet and performer, Eva Knowles Johnson and wereentertained by Ellie Lovegrove and Eleanor Lange with the CASM Ensembleincluding James Stanley.
As Commissioner for Aboriginal Engagement, Khatija Thomas is responsible forpublicly advocating for engagement between the broader community andAboriginal people and investigating and advising on systemic barriers forAboriginal peoples’ access and full participation in government, non governmentand private services.
Thomas spoke on a personal levelabout her motivation to succeed coming from her parents and her grandparents’strong convictions about formal education being the best way to advance theAboriginal cause. Beliefs they held while living in some of the most appallingliving conditions in Australia at the time.
Specialguests for the Melbourne event, held on Friday 12 October at the PeninsulaDocklands, are to be announced shortly.
Fundraising for the entertaining luncheon will include a silent auction and a raffle. Allfunds raised at the Women’s Luncheon go to The Long Walk Cultural Exchange inSouth Australia which will be undertaken by Marra Dreaming, a community basedco-operative offering art and personal development classes for the Aboriginalcommunity in the northern suburbs of Adelaide.
