Cato, 32, has spent the past nine years working as a lawyer with the AFL’s lawyers Browne & Co. He departs as a partner of the firm.
He has an extensive understanding of the AFL and its workings having been involved in the drafting of AFL rules and regulations and tribunal and Appeal's Board processes. He was also involved in Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations and the drafting of the standard player contract.
Cato's expertise extends beyond AFL football having also acted on behalf of a number of other sporting organisations including the Holden Racing Team, Victorian Country Football League, Soccer Australia.
Essendon chief executive Peter Jackson said Cato's appointment was another example of the club breaking down the traditional barriers with regards football appointments.
