Mark McVeigh's striking charge against Geelong's Gary Ablett was downgraded by the AFL tribunal last night but he will still miss this weekend's match against the Western Bulldogs. McVeigh's strike was originally graded as high but the Bombers' successfully argued he had not made high contact.
Essendon knew in appealing the decision and pleading guilty to low contact that McVeigh would still miss this weekend's match however a successful appeal has ensured he now has 80 less points on his record should he have to front the tribunal again.
Essendon will contest the Mark McVeigh striking charge this afternoon in the hope of getting the Match Review Panel's ""high contact"" assessment (two points) downgraded. Even if Essendon is successful at the Tribunal, McVeigh will still miss Saturday's clash with the Western Bulldogs, however, a downgraded assessment will improve his record and will affect any future charges.
