Brilliant West Indian cricketer Viv Richards today addressed the Essendon players for over an hour on what it takes to get to the top and stay at the top. Essendon players fired a number of questions at the West Indian great before he headed outside for an all-in photo with the players.
And it was on the ground that Matty Lloyd thought he might show Viv a thing or two about playing cricket. Armed with a taped tennis ball and with John Barnes keeping wickets, Lloyd charged in to bowl at Richards. Lloyd bowled a short of a length delivery and paid the penalty - Viv leaned back and whacked it into the second row of the Alan Hird Stand.
It seemed to put the usual unshakeable Lloyd on the back foot. His second and final delivery to the great man was one of the biggest wides Windy Hill would have ever seen. ""I'm not exactly Dennis Lillee,"" Lloyd laughed. ""He still sees the ball okay. At least I can say I had a bowl at him.""
Prior to leaving Windy Hill, Kevin Sheedy put Viv in an Essendon jumper and gave him a guided tour of the Essendon Hall of Fame. The pair were also photographed holding the 2000 Premiership Cup.
