Essendon centre half forward Scott Lucas was tonight cleared of a striking charge by the AFL tribunal and is available for the Bombers' Round 13 clash with Melbourne at Colonial Stadium. Lucas was charged with striking Hawthorn's John Barker during last Friday night's match at the MCG. But after hearing evidence from the umpire and both players, the tribunal felt that on balance there was sufficient doubt and found the charge not sustained.
We have just passed the half-way point of the season and the Bombers have not had the perfect start to 2002, despite sitting in fifth position on the AFL ladder. Injuries to key players - James Hird, Matthew Lloyd, Joe Misiti, Mark Mercuri and Dustin Fletcher at different times has taken its toll. Mercuri and Fletcher have returned and Hird, Lloyd and Misiti are set to return soon after the break as the Bombers begin their final push for a top-four finish.
