Jay Nash joined Mayor Cr Jan Chantry and children from Wingate Community Centre recently to launch the Walking School Bus partnership between Wingate Community Centre and Ascot Vale Primary School.

Essendon Football Club is a proud supporter of the Walking School Bus and has worked together with the Moonee Valley City Council throughout 2006 to promote program, which aims to encourage physical activity in primary school aged children.

The Walking School Bus program, which currently operates in eight primary schools throughout the City of Moonee Valley, sees children walk to school under the supervision of trained volunteers. Each weekday the Bus walks a designated route, picking up and delivering children at 'bus stops' on the way to school.

The Essendon Football Club hopes that in establishing the Walking School Bus program at community centres such as Wingate, disadvantaged children will be encouraged to attend school on a more regular basis via increased accessibility.

The Walking School Bus program also aims to improve the children’s overall health, build friendships and increase road safety awareness.
