Bomberland users have voted in favor of the bounce remaining an integral part of our game although some did put some conditions on it. Of those who voted, 1082 (63.5%) voted in favor of umpires bouncing the ball whilr 620 (36.5%) said the ball ball should be thrown up. However, many of our voters commented that the ball should only be bounced at the start of each quarter and following goals with the ball to be thrown up at other stoppages in play. This week's Bomberland Poll asks users just who they think is the Bombers most skillful player.
Brett Crabtree from Adelaide says: The ball should be bounced at the centre bounce at the start of each quarter and after a goal, however it should be thrown up around the ground. This will both avoid ruckman wrestling and also speed up getting the ball back in play thus avoiding the current congestion at around-the-ground stoppages.
Brendan from Naracoorte SA says: I still wholeheartedly agree with the ball being bounced in the centre square either to begin a quarter or after a goal ... however in general play I could live with the ball being thrown up.
Mark Kane from Epping says: Even though I would not like to see the bounce disappear - throwing it up gives a more even chance to all. The poor bouncing this year by the umpires sways me to the throw ups. Lets not take the ruckman out of the game seeing the palming of the ball is a skill lets not lose it.
Clive from Melbourne says: The game is about testing the players skills, not about testing to see if umpires can bounce the ball properly. Umpires should have minimal impact on the game and bad bounces do have an impact. Throw it up.
Nathan from Bellerive, Tasmania says: Of course the ball should be bounced. Throwing it up would take the skill out of the ruck contest, the tallest player would always win. Ruck contests are about skill, not who has the tallest or best jumping players on the field. Maybe on wet days it could be considered in ball ups around the ground, but not in a normal situation.
Grace from ballarat, Victoria says: I think that bouncing the ball up actually gives the umpire more time to get out of the way, because it goes down and then up, not just up.
David Gallagher from Canberra says: Bouncing the ball requires wider skills of the ruckman as he has to adjust to less predicatable contests
Nig from USA says: The ball should be bounced in the centre, but thrown up at all other times. Then the umpire would be able to get out of the way in time.
Matthew Oliver from Geelong says: Umpires should bounce the ball in the middle, and throw it up elsewhere on the ground.
Geoff Gilmour from Melba,ACT says: Bounce the ball. There is nothing wrong with a little uncertainty. It is one of the factors that makes our game great!
Reece Freak from Adelaide/SA/Aus. says: The bounce of the ball is a very well known trademark of our great game and one that should be left alone. Getting rid of it would cause great sadness in the football world
Sinna from Victoria says: They should keep bouncing the ball because it is a tradition in this game and it is the only skill that the umpires have so why take that away from them?
Robert Parry from Hoppers Crossing, Victoria, Australia says: I am a bit of a traditionalist in this regard. We need to maintain the art of the umpires bouncing the football, not flogging it off, due to some not being skilled in it.
Jarod Thomson from Victoria, Kyabram says: If the ball is to be bounced it will end up favouring the oppisition. So it should be thrown up for an equal chance for the players.
Greg Preston from Cherrybrook NSW says: Football is a skillful game; both by players and umpires. Bouncing the ball correctly is a highlight of the game and can you imagine starting a grand final with a ball up rather than a spectacular high bounce? Leave the game alone and stop fiddling with it!
