In Essendon's final full-scale competitive workout before the season, the Bomber's coaching staff put their players through a searching hit-out and Windy Hill this afternoon. In damp conditions, Essendon players battled it out for four, 25-minute quarters with no punches being pulled in the quest for a place in the side that will take on the Kangaroos in seven days time. The star of the afternoon was on-baller Jason Johnson who simply dominated in the midfield but there were plenty of positive signs for the Bombers.

Matthew Lloyd was excellent at full forward where youngster Sam Hunt had his hands full. Lloyd had kicked 4.5 by the main break. Adam Ramanauskas showed he has lost none of his silky skill playing an excellent game on the outer wing for his side. Other players to impress were David Hille, John Barnes, Mark Mercuri, Scott Lucas and Joe Misiti.

Missing from this afternoon's match were James Hird (calf), Chris Heffernan (knee), Damien Hardwick (Calf) and Dean Rioli (flu).
