Alex Browne will make his much anticipated AFL debut in this Friday night's Call to Arms blockbuster against Melbourne.
Recruited with selection 48 in last year's draft, Browne is a versatile half-backman who can also move into the midfield.
Travis Colyer also comes into the side this week to replace Alwyn Davey and Kyle Reimers who have both been omitted.
Essendon coach James Hird has identified the middle part of the season - starting on Friday night against Melbourne at the MCG - as the key factor in his club's push towards finals action. The Bombers finished 14th in 2010 and currently sit in fifth position on the ladder, but Hird said their next ""month or two"" of games were vital if the season would be deemed a success.
