Assistant coach, Ashley Prescott, believes the key to the Bombers' electrifying 44-point win against Hawthorn was the team’s ability to mark inside 50 and the defensive pressure they applied.
Speaking on Weekend Rewind, Prescott said that the team showed an improved intensity across all four quarters which was highlighted when they finished the night in style with the game's last four goals.
“Our ability to mark the ball inside 50 was probably the key to our win,” he said.
“I think we had 24 marks inside 50 which was phenomenal, particularly against a side like Hawthorn who pride themselves on winning the ball out of defence.
“That is linked in with our ability to take risks with our run and carry, to attack the game through the corridor and dispose of the ball.""
Prescott commended the efforts of youngsters Tayte Pears and Cale Hooker for their defensive efforts in limiting Hawthorn’s forward line but also highlighted the team’s defensive efforts all over the ground.
“If you can help your defence out with some midfield numbers and even by holding the ball a little bit longer in your forward 50, it really helps, the boys should be really happy about the overall team defence,” he said.
Next week, the Bomber’s will meet ladder leaders St. Kilda and Prescott says the young side cannot afford to lose focus or drop off in intensity.
“I certainly think we can win next week. I think the fact that it is against St. Kilda gives this young group some real momentum,” he said.
“Being able to maintain consistency and stringing back-to-back wins together is what we are focusing on.
“We need to make sure we get it right regardless of who we are playing. In saying that we are coming up against the best side in the competition at the moment so the pressure is right on us.""
