Essendon’s finest were out in force yesterday to show their support to former team-mate and cancer survivor Adam Ramanauskas in a charity golf day at Sandhurst Golf Club.
James Hird, Scott Lucas, Mark Mercuri and Barry Young put their golf skills to the test to help raise over $11,000 for the Cancer Council’s Relay for Life event which will be held at Windy Hill in February 2010.
While pleased with the calibre of talent taking part on the day, Ramanauskas said some footballers should stick to kicking a sherrin.
“Hirdy’s team finished last so it is quite clear that he was a much better at football than he will ever be at golf,” Ramanauskas said.
“Scotty Lucas had more luck kicking the ball down the fairway than he did hitting it, and Mercs (Mercuri) is actually a pretty good golfer so I think he would be a bit disappointed he didn’t actually win the day.
”In all seriousness though, it was a great day to raise funds for such an important cause and it was good to see so many of the guys get behind it.”
Ramanauskas’ Relay for Life team, TEAM RAMA, will also host a charity fashion parade at Crown Palladium on Wednesday 25 November featuring Essendon players to raise further funds for the cause.
