The consensus among Essendon supporters is that Andrew Welsh has what it takes to be a 200-game player for the Bombers and possibly a future leader. Most Essendon supporters were impressed by his coolness under pressure and hardness of the ball. Some criticised his disposal but most felt the foundations have been laid for a long and successful career in the red and black. Read Andrew Welsh’s full Fans Report Card.

Robert Shaw’s thoughts:
Andrew really developed as a senior player this season. When he first came into the seniors, he was troubled with small forwards and their pace, we saw that in the Wizard Cup. We were a little bit worried that he might not be zippy enough to handle the Farmers, the Medhursts and the Materas. All of a sudden he started to balance his defensive game with an attacking game. When Andrew discovered the best way to handle these players is not to be defensive, but to actually attack them with the ball, he became a real tough player in our backline and a really good rebounder. His kicking out of defence was excellent and he is uncompromising in his approach to the opposition.

What some of fan’s had to say:
“Great season! Was one of the shining lights at Essendon and should now be considered for roles within the midfield. He and Mcviegh showed great determination throughout the year and now with a strong pre-season should be rewarded with a more attractive role on the half-back line or mid-field. His running drive out of defence was a pleasure to watch and his disposal, (which some Essendon players are currently lacking), was concise and accurate. With Lucas, Welsh was the find of the year.” Frederick Borg.

“Committed to the task and hard working. Tends to make crucial mistakes under extreme pressure. Disposal can be sloppy.” Tim Bortoli.

“Typifies the recruiting skill of the club. Is solid in defence and contributes to some run out of the back line.” Liam Ryan.

“Welsh was tremendous all season, considering his age, he seemed to contribute outstandingly to each game he played. Has much promise for the future.” Nicole Butler.

“A fabulous season. Reliable, providing drive and a solid mark in defense. Teamed very well with Lucas, Wellman and Fletcher.” Ian Simpson.

“Was fantastic in only his second season. Was able to take on opposition forwards and also run the ball out of defence. Good speed and has been a handy goalkicker at times, as against Brisbane.” Alex Maunder.

“This kid will be a superstar.” James Couch.

“Andrew continues to impress. Doesn't understand the term """"2nd year blues"""". Has gone from strength to strength. Could be a leader in the backline if he continues down this path.” Paul Mazziotta.
