It has been a dream six weeks for the Bombers Damien Peverill. The 21-year-old was promoted from the rookie list to cover the loss of Joe Misiti and played his first game against Sydney in round four. He has been excellent for Essendon in each of his six senior games. But in two weeks time Peverill's time at the top will come to a grinding halt - at least for the time being. Joe Misiti will come off the long-term injury list at the completion of round 11 and will play in the Bombers round 12 clash against Adelaide. Misiti's return will see Peverill return to the rookie list.
""Damien has been good for us but he knows what the rules are and is just enjoying the games he has played this year - every game is a bonus as far as he is concerned,"" Essendon football manager Matthew Drain said. ""We do have room for him to stay on in terms of numbers on our player list but salary cap restrictions mean we won't be able to keep him on.""
So Peverill has games against Brisbane and St Kilda to come before he season almost certainly comes to an end. He could be re-instated on the senior list should another player suffer an injury that will sideline them for a minimum of eight weeks.
But the St Kilda game is unlikely to be the last Bomber supporters see of Peverill. As a rookie, Essendon has the option of adding him to their senior list at the end of this season. ""As our rookie we get first crack at him and obviously - based on what we have seen this season - there is every chance we will put him on the list,"" Drain said. Essendon would not have to use a draft selection to pick up Peverill.
