The Essendon fans agreed that Paul Barnard has been a loyal servant of the Essendon Football Club for the past eight years and his 'hard-at-it' style of play was appreciated by all. Most fans felt that his final season at the club didn’t reflect his true abilities and that injuries and suspension prevented him from being a regular senior player. All Bomber fans wished Barnard well in retirement and thanked him for the memories, particularly his four-goal performance in the 2000 grand final.

Robert Shaw’s thoughts:
Paul has ended a remarkable career. Not many AFL players would be able to say at the end of their career that they got the most out of their ability. He has played in grand finals and in preliminary finals and has always been a tremendous asset both on and off the field. To kick four goals in the 2000 grand final off the bench was a fantastic effort and he will always be remembered as a great clubman.

What some of fan’s had to say:

Unfortunately with injury did not get the final year he would have hoped for. But throughout the years has been a great player for the club. Elaine Chan

Probably not his best season, however has been a great servant for the club. Good luck in retirement Barney and hope all goes well in your new venture with the Bendigo Boys. Wayne Geggie

Good luck to Barney and his future with Bendigo Bombers. Unfortunately his last year did not live up to his true ability. However he will be greatly remembered for his 2000 GF goal haul. Paul Bosher

Always a great fan of Barney, who at his best was a fearsome competitor who played with great enthusiasm and aggression. Unfortunately, his contributions during 2003 were below his previous high standards. Best of luck Barney, for the future. Leonard Clark

The end of a great a career and a great Essendon man, although he had an average year compared to usual standards it did not tarnish the great career he had. Steve McNaught

Down on previous seasons, but what a great and loyal servant he has been for this club after crossing from Hawthorn. Fond memories of his 4 goals in the 2000 Grand Final. You have definitely been a credit to your self, your family and this club, Paul. Well done on a fantastic AFL career. Alan Fairbairn

Barney's season was a little bit up and down due to injury and was unable to settle into a routine, but thanks for your services at the club mate well done enjoy your retirement. Darren Walden

Barney has always given 110% whenever he has graced the field for the Bombers. Unfortunately his injury restricted his playing time this year. Has moved on to facilitate the further development of a younger player. A great clubman and respected player. Terry Newman
