Being named in the squad marks a very important step forward for Sam Michael in his return to AFL football.
Delisted by the Brisbane Lions at the end of the 2014 season after three senior games, Michael is set to get his chance to prove the doubters wrong this Sunday against St.Kilda.
Having celebrated his 23rd Birthday earlier this week, the big man’s inclusion comes after several strong displays with Essendon VFL.
Michael has proven to be versatile across a number of positions, playing forward, back and also in the ruck.
Ultimately, it was this versatility that saw him get the nod from the coaches this week.
“He’s obviously been close, he’s been an emergency a number of times – maybe six or seven times this year,” Coach John Worsfold said.
“He’s been developing his game in the VFL.
“He’s played back, forward and in the ruck so he’s really developed an all-round game that can give us a lot of flexibility.”
Renowned at the Club for his constant hard work, both on and off the field, Michael will make the most of his opportunities to once again play on the big stage.
In the absence of both Matthew Leuenberger and Mark Jamar, Michael will be joined by ruckman Shaun McKernan.
McKernan has had somewhat of a difficult season, battling injury before making a dominant return for Essendon VFL three weeks ago.
The ex-Crow has been a standout in both the ruck and up forward since returning and has also earned his senior call-up.
He put serious pressure on the selection committee in Essendon VFL’s come from behind victory against Werribee two weeks ago, kicking three goals, laying six tackles and dominating in the ruck.
“Shaun’s in very good form – he’s had some injuries this year, but he’s been building his form over the last five or six weeks,” Worsfold said.
“With Leuenberger and Jamar out, we’re definitely going to need him up and going.”
