A super fit and pumped up Matthew Lloyd ran a personal best time at Essendon's 3.2km time trial today at Princes Park. Lloyd finished fourth and had tough competition from Mark Bolton who won the event with a time of 10 minutes 49 seconds. Bolton made no mistake about why he is considered as one of the fittest players at the club. He recorded back-to-back victories after winning the time trial at the start of the pre-season in early November. Bolton was closely followed by mid-fielder Jason Johnson and draftee Brent Stanton.

""I felt everyone of the 3.2kms. I went out pretty hard, but the wheels feel off about halfway, but I managed to hold on,"" Bolton said. ""We have all had a good pre-season Christmas campaign and everyone has had a real go. We have done a lot of training of this type and even the shorter distances as well and everyone has come up really well.""

Rookie James Davies and draftee Ricky Dyson ran impressively and crossed the finishing line after Lloyd. Adam McPhee, James Hird, Mark Johnson and Marc Bullen followed soon after. The players will enjoy a rest day tomorrow and return to normal pre-season training on Wednesday with a 10am skills session at La Trobe University.

Other news to come out of today's time trial:

  • Damien Peverill, Adam Ramanauskas, Sam Hunt and Andrew Welsh are all on modified programs and rode bikes around Princes Park.
  • Ted Richard's has put on three kilograms over the Christmas break and finished today's time trial in the top ten.
  • David Hille ran the quickest time out of the ruckmen - Matthew Allan and Jason Laycock finished closely behind him.
  • Best mates Dean Solomon and Mark Alvey are even inseparable when they run. Both crossed the finish line at exactly the same time.
  • Sean Wellman, Justin Murphy, Mark Mercuri, Dustin Fletcher and Joe Misiti didn't run because they are still on long service leave. They return to training on Wednesday.
