Essendon has placed co-vice captain Michael Hurley on its inactive list for the rest of the 2021 season.

General manager of football Josh Mahoney said the move was another example of Hurley’s team-first mentality.

"'Hurls' has been making good progress in his recovery from a hip infection,” Mahoney said.

"It has become a reality however that it is highly unlikely that he would be available to play football this season, and based on that he will be placed on our inactive list.

“This decision allows us the potential to have two selections at this week’s AFL mid-season draft.

“Being the ultimate team player, Hurls was accepting of this decision and understanding of the opportunity it creates for the club.”
