The AFL has today confirmed Essendon will face Greater Western Sydney on Sunday, July 25, with a venue and time still to be confirmed.

The round 19 match was originally scheduled for 4:35pm AEST on Saturday at Marvel Stadium, with the Bombers still in Queensland following Sunday's win over North Melbourne at Metricon Stadium.

Early on Monday, chief executive officer Xavier Campbell spoke to Melbourne radio station SEN 1116 to address the "moving landscape" that was round 19.

“It’s a moving landscape at the moment. I guess when you ask 'Why are we in Queensland?' right now, it’s difficult to understand what the future landscape looks like from the AFL’s perspective,” Campbell said.

“They’re trying to create as much flexibility in the system as they can. With Queensland, there’s obviously a greater level of movement at the moment (than Melbourne with restrictions).

“We would love to be back in Melbourne, we’d love our players and staff to be reunited with their families, we’d love for our club to be back with its family – that is our members – and we want to be in Queensland for only as long as we need to be. The AFL knows that and that’s what they want as well. There’s still a lot of moving parts and over the next 72 hours I imagine things will crystalise a little bit more.”

Campbell said he was continuing to lobby the AFL for the match to be played in Melbourne, but understood the complexities of the AFL landscape which has still been impacted by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

“The AFL ultimately makes these decisions but they seek input from the clubs. I would’ve spent two hours yesterday morning with Travis Auld yesterday in Queensland. We spoke at length about the different challenges – some we’re aware of and some we’re just not because they’re (AFL) looking at things so much further down the path,” Campbell said.

“Clearly clubs sometimes have a myopic view, we can be singularly focused, but to truly understand the industry piece that’s the AFL’s role to do that. So, they are very aware we’d love to be playing in Melbourne, having our players with their families, and our objective is to be playing our next couple of games in Melbourne. But we won’t know that for the next few days.”

The AFL also advised AFL supplementary protocols have been in place for the following teams effective yesterday – Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Geelong, GWS, Hawthorn, Melbourne, North Melbourne, Richmond, St Kilda, Sydney and the Western Bulldogs.
