Former rookie Ben Haynes had a minor setback earlier in the month when he was diagnosed with a stress reaction in his foot. The good news for Haynes is that scans revealed there was no fracture and he is expected to be available for selection in Round 1. Bomber coach Kevin Sheedy believes that Haynes has the ability to become a top class mid-fielder for the team providing he continues to work hard on the track.

2003
Ben Haynes put the disappointment of dislocating his shoulder in a pre-season practice match behind him, when he returned mid-way through the season in stellar form. Haynes returned after the mid-season bye and dominated in the three games he played for the Bendigo Bombers. He averaged 30 plus possessions in the VFL, which caught the eye of the coaching staff. He was elevated to the senior list and played the remaining seven games in the seniors, including the two finals against Fremantle and Port Adelaide. The 22-year-old was given a permanent spot on the senior list at the end of the season.

STRENGTHS
Haynes’ fancy foot work and polished skills became the former rookies trademark in 2003. The former Richmond player can be damaging by both hand and foot. His ability to carry the football forward for the team and create goal scoring opportunities is also a strength of his game.

POSITION
Haynes was predominantly used off the bench in 2003 and played a variety of roles. He spent time in the midfield, across the wing and also pushed forward. Haynes football smarts ensures he will continue to play in a variety of positions and could be beneficial in adding extra scoring power to the forwardline. He proved he is a handy forward option when he booted five goals in seven encounters.

2004
Haynes has worked hard over the past two seasons to get a spot on Essendon’s senior list. Now that he has achieved this he needs to make a name for himself at senior level. He has the football smarts and ability to become a regular senior player and his ability to effectively play in a number of positions will also hold him in good stead.

WHAT SHEEDY SAYS
Ben Haynes is another player to come off the rookie list and grab that opportunity. He needs to keep working on his fitness and his skills because those are the areas that need to always improve to always be a top class mid-fielder.
