Essendon’s VFLW Senior Coach Cherie O’Neill has announced to the playing group that she will finish up at the Club following three seasons at the helm.
 
O’Neill’s decision to depart will allow her to place a greater focus on her full-time work and family commitments.
 
Since taking charge of the Bombers’ VFLW program, O’Neill has played an important role in the group’s development, leading the side to consecutive finals appearances in 2024 and 2025.
 
O’Neill also played a key role in the early development of Essendon’s AFLW program, serving as a Development Coach for the side.
 
Highly respected by both the playing group and staff, O’Neill leaves a lasting impact on the program.
 
Head of AFLW Operations & VFLW Georgia Harvey highlights the impact that O’Neill has had on the playing group and wider VFLW program.
 
“Cherie has made a significant contribution to our VFLW program over the past three seasons,” Harvey said.
 
“She’s been incredibly committed to the program and has built strong relationships with our players and staff throughout her time at the Club.
  
“We thank her for everything she has given to Essendon and wish her and her family all the very best for what’s ahead - they’ll always be welcome at EFC.”
 
O’Neill reflected fondly on her time at Essendon and said she was excited about what the future holds for the playing group.
 
“Georgia and El Chaston have been amazing, they’re absolute rocks of the program,” O’Neill said.
 
“Even just all the staff in general, everyone bought into the program and made me feel really welcome. I really have enjoyed building those connections with both players and staff it's been really special.
 
“I think the future of the group, if they can keep a good core group together, it really excites me, and I think once they keep building on that connection piece and really honing into the values and finding that consistency, they will be unstoppable.
 
“They’re a great group, I really enjoyed being a small part of their journey so I hope they can take it to another level next year.
 
“For now, I’ll take some time to spend it with my family. I suppose for the last five years I've been travelling up and down the highway three times a week, so getting a little time back in my life too. 
 
“Coaching's a part of me and I've really enjoyed being a small part of some of these players and their journeys, so I don't think I’ll ever step away completely.”
