James Hird, the greatest living player at Essendon, is the most recent former captain, leading the club from 1998-2005. At the helm for eight seasons, Hird epitomised what makes an outstanding leader and with his uncanny ability to read the play was given almost free reign by his coach such was his influence on the game.
