Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy was naturally disappointed after yesterdays 48-point loss to the Adelaide Crows. In his post-match press conference Sheedy said the team’s season is on the line and they must win against Collingwood this Saturday night. ""We have been up and down all year. There should be no excuses not to play well next week. It is a desperate situation for this club - we haven't been in this position since 1998. It is a first for all of us and you would have to say that we are in the middle of the AFL ladder at the moment and we deserve to be there,” Sheedy said.

Q. Has the mid-field overly relied on Jason Johnson?
A. Probably it has - it is a situation where with the injuries we have had, it has put a decent load on his shoulders. Maybe he just might be getting tired for carrying the side for 19 matches and other players doing cameo roles. If they want to do cameo roles, they can either do them in the seconds or sit on the bench - or if they want to keep their careers spot on and up there at the bench mark, you have to play better than that. These players have to dig deep and make sure we perform a whole lot better to have any chance of winning next week. The pressure is on us to make sure we get out there and give our season the best run for our money.

Q. At half-time you must have been reasonably please to be 14-points down?
A. We had a couple of opportunities that could have possibly made the game even, but I would have to say it was very disappointing in the third quarter.

Q. What do you think changed the game?
A. They got on top in the mid-field and they have a very, very good mid-field. Biglands has really improved as a player and their quality mid-fielders move the ball into the forward line pretty quick and smart.

Q. Did the form of Chris Ladhams surprise you?
A. He has played quite well. I saw him play against Geelong and he has played well the last four or five weeks. He is a much improved player and to see him kick that goal from the boundary line that put them back in the ball park and put a nail in our coffin, even though it was at Essendon for a while.

Q. Adelaide were very hard at the ball?
A. They were very hard and very good and they definitely played a lot better than they did last week against Sydney. From our point of view - it was very disappointing that middle part of the game.

Q. Where do you need to improve, to turn your game around?
A. I don't think we are generating enough play to get the ball inside 50m. We are leaving it up to too few and relying on a handful of players at the moment. We need to get enough of the ball to give our forward line an opportunity. Our backline had it against them 60 odd times and that is a hell of a lot. In the end they played quite well but Adelaide had the footy more times than us.

Q. Is it fair to say, that if you don't win next week that could be your season?
A. Next Saturday night is a definite knock out final for us to keep our season alive. At least we have that opportunity because a lot of clubs don't.

Q. James Hird did a lot more damage when he went into the centre - would you look to start him there next week?
A. We might try one or two other players there because I prefer Hird in the forward line - creating goals for us. Joe Misiti is just starting to run back into form after missing nine weeks and we get Rioli back next week - there are a couple of players we can bring in.

Q. What do you think has been one of your major problems this season?
A. Inconsistency has been one of our problems all year. All of a sudden we can go out there and play a terrific game and there is no rhyme or reason to pin point this. We come over to Adelaide and play 90 minutes of reasonably good footy and then 30 minutes when Adelaide run over the top of us.

Q. Over your career, you generally remain positive in these situations - are you going to get into the team a little bit this week?
A. I will get into them a little bit because it was frustrating to go into the last quarter eight goals down and kick the first four goals and have 20 minutes to try and win the game. My comment is - why didn't we do it in the third quarter. We have to make sure we play a sustained game, rather than fluctuating.
