Billy Cootee will lead Essendon for the 2023 Smithy’s VFL Season, with the 20-year-old announced as Captain at tonight’s guernsey presentation.

Cootee will be supported by Vice-Captains Sam Conforti and Brad Bernacki, while Jake Sutton and Jacob Brown will round out the leadership group.

Over his past three seasons at the Bombers, Cootee has shown outstanding leadership, developed from his experience of captaining multiple sporting teams, including Western Jets at Under-18 level.

In a reflection of his impact on the club, Cootee was named last year’s Jack Feain Best Clubman, awarded to the player that best represents the club’s values, attitudes, and always goes out of their way to support those at the club.

VFL Manager Bernard Shepheard said Cootee’s maturity and composure was exceptional during his time at the club and will be a fantastic leader for the 2023 season.

“At only 20 years old, Billy has leadership and maturity beyond his years,” Shepheard said.

“He has leadership experience from captaining Western Jets and throughout his junior cricket career, which was clearly demonstrated when he returned from injury last year to pull together 10 very strong games for us.

“Alongside Billy will be Vice-Captains Sam and Brad and supported by Jake and Jacob. This group will be excellent leaders for our program, setting the professional standards and expectations needed for success.”

The VFL Bombers will start their season on March 26, hosting GWS Giants at The NEC Hangar from 2:05pm.
