Essendon will officially launch its 2027 campaign with a Sunday afternoon clash against Melbourne at the MCG, broadcast live on Channel 7.

The AFL confirmed the round one fixture on Tuesday, with the Bombers set to play alongside the rest of the competition following the league’s departure from Opening Round.

It marks the first time the two historic clubs have met in a round one clash since 2005, which served as an emotionally charged replay of the previous season’s elimination final.

In addition to yesterday’s release of the 2027 Gather Round slate (a clash with the Roos in Norwood), today’s announcement is another exciting development in preparation for next season.

The full fixture is set to be announced in the coming days, and the Club will communicate ticketing details as soon as they become available.
