Essendon skipper James Hird spoke to the media today for the first time since his head injury. Hird returned from Perth last night with wife Tania and daughter Stephanie and is extremely grateful for the support he has received during the past ten days. ""I have to say the public's response has been sensational - I want to thank all the people in Perth. The people in Perth looked after me so well. General people in the street sent me flowers, cards, phone calls - people I have never met. People in Melbourne - just everyone, the media, the footy club, everyone I have been with has just been sensational. I would like to thank the general public, the Essendon Footy club and even the media have been great with the way they have dealt with it - so thanks very much,"" Hird said.

Q. We have heard what the surgeon said about the incident, what can you remember?

A. Basically I copped a knee in the eye and the operation is pretty blurry as to what happened so it is hard to give an in-depth description of everything. I am really glad to be home and back in Melbourne.

Q. Your recovery - can you remember that?
A. I remember most of it - it is just a bit hazy. I spent a few days in hospital - I have been in hospital before with injuries and it is pretty similar to that. You take a few drugs and they look after you in hospital pretty well.

Q. What are your plans for the next few weeks?
A. To get back to normal life and look forward to getting back to training in a couple of weeks and playing footy in six to seven weeks - that is the plan. I will go and see a surgeon again in the next few days and he will tell where I can go from there.

Q. There has been speculation whether you will play on again - has that entered your mind?
A. When you are lying in hospital you don't really think about it too much. I am really keen to get back into training and start playing - it is something I am really looking forward to.

Q. Do you think there will be a psychological hurdle to overcome?
A. Not at the moment. I am really excited about playing footy again so I can't see why there would be a problem. If I am excited now I will be even more excited in six weeks, so I can't see any real reason why I wouldn't want to play.

Q. Do you feel at all it might change the way you play?
A. Not at all - you can't think about that kind of stuff.

Q. How do you feel now?
A. There is a bit of numbness in my face and still a lot of swelling. My face feels tight but other than that there is no pain in my face, it is not sore at all. The surgeon did a great job. It is 10-12 days since the operation so a lot of the swelling has gone down already.

Q. Can you remember coming off the ground?A. It is pretty vague. I am sure it will all come back but I couldn't tell you exactly what happened because it all happened so quickly.

Q. Have you seen a replay of the incident?
A. Yes - it was on t.v about 500 times, so I saw plenty of it. It doesn't really look that bad - it looks like something you would do a couple of times a year. It was an accident - I got pushed and Mark (McVeigh) feel forward - it shouldn't have happened what happened but unfortunately you hit a certain way and it happens.

Q. Have you spoken to anyone with a similar injury?
A. No I haven't spoken to anyone but where I was at in the hospital a lot of the nurses treat car accident victims that have those sorts of injuries and described how you get over it and how you have a lot of swelling for six weeks and once that is gone you feel pretty normal.

Q. Have you spoken to Mark McVeigh?
A. Yes I have spoken to Mark a few times. He was a bit upset by it but it was an accident and he didn't know what he was doing and there is no hard feelings there. He feels pretty upset about it and there is no reason to feel upset about it. I think you just get on with it and that is the way it goes.

Q. There was criticism of the doctor for releasing information on your operation - what are your thoughts?
A. The doctor, Shaun Hamilton, rang me and said he was getting a fair bit of people ringing him all the time wanting to know what had happened. I said I had nothing to hide there - I think it is information that if people want to know about they can read about and if they don't they won't read it. He asked my permission and he wasn't that keen to give it. He said that if you don't mind we will put it out there. It is something I fully agreed with. He is a terrific doctor and he is a very sincere and quiet person and he has come to me first - so I don't have a problem with that at all.
