Jye Menzie is proving to be another mid-season draft success story for the Bombers this year.

Fresh off a two-goal showing against Carlton on Sunday night, the small forward has now hit the scoreboard in 11 of his 14 AFL matches to date, including a goal in each of his past seven games.

Speaking to Essendon FC after the victory over the Blues, the improving Menzie was quick to herald his teammates for his personal form.

“It’s always great (to be playing well), but you have to bring it back down to your teammates," Menzie said.

“Without them, I wouldn’t be getting those scoring opportunities, so I’ll definitely pay them back.”

One of those teammates was star forward Peter Wright, who made an immediate impact with five goals in his first game for the season after a shoulder dislocation in March.

Menzie loved what he saw from Wright’s return, especially after the ill timing of the big man’s injury on the eve of the season.

“It was gut-wrenching for everyone (watching Wright go down), and to see him back out there flying and kicking a bag is great to see,” Menzie said.

Menzie found himself involved in many scoring opportunities during the Dons’ third-quarter blitz on Sunday, which saw six consecutive goals to bust the contest open.

Menzie noted it was a key message at half-time to take the game on, which ultimately paid dividends on the scoreboard.

“We spoke about the way (Carlton) want to play. They get really skinny, so if we take the ball off the line, we’ll have plenty of opportunities,” Menzie said.

“When you have Pete (Wright) coming in forward and just clunking them like that, it makes it a lot easier.”

Heading into the bye with an 8-5 record on the season, Menzie is keen for the prospect of jumping back into things after the break.

“It’s going to be a good refresher for the boys, it’ll be great to just rejuvenate and relax for a couple of days and then get back into it after the bye,” Menzie said.
