David Myers says Essendon's breakthrough win over Fremantle was a step closer to the club being ""taken seriously"".

Myers was crucial in the 24-point win with 28 disposals, and he says the club's improved form away from home - it has won three from three outside Victoria this year - was important in its development.

""It was a massive win for us,"" Myers said.

""To be taken seriously later in the year you have to be winning on the road and it's just a good reward for effort. We trained pretty hard and set ourselves for it.""

Myers said the Bombers' back-to-back close defeats in round 10 and 11 (to Melbourne and the Sydney Swans) had helped inspire the win.

""The couple of games before we had a couple of tight losses and they're always hard to stomach when you're just shy of getting the four points,"" he said.

""Travelling interstate and to Perth in particular, the crowd's against you the whole time. To go over there and play the way we did and get the win, there's no better feeling really.""

Michael Hurley starred in Essendon's win with six goals.

Despite leaving the field to get some attention to his wrist, and wearing a bandage at training on Monday, Myers said Hurley will be fine to face the Western Bulldogs this week.

""I think he just had a bit of a knock to it,"" Myers said.

""I'm pretty certain he'll be right to play this week.""
