The Bombers' finals race appears over following a 19-point loss to Melbourne at the MCG.

The side gave away too many easy goals to the Demons through free kicks and failed too apply scoreboard pressure with inaccurate kicking.

Assistant coach Gary O'Donnell said a poor defensive first half hurt the side badly.

""We were not good enough defensively in the first half,"" he said.

""They had about 50 uncontested marks and that is too many to have against us. We didn't have the desperation around the ground to stop them.

""Our coverage of our opponents was not good enough and Mebourne kept spotting each other up.

""Also we were not good going forward, especially our last disposal into the forward 50. We were able to get eight more inside 50s than them, which has not been happening in the last four or five weeks, but our ability to use it and think our way through it was poor.""

O'Donnell said only a handful of players received a pass mark today.

""Young Travis Colyer runs fast and gets the ball, takes them on which was good,"" he said.

""Jason Winderlich ran hard again and Heath Hocking continues to compete.

""Although ay Neagle wasn't a world better he got a dozen touches and kicked three goals which will give him confidence coming back.

""Jobe got a bit of the ball but, overall, it wasn't and great day for most of our players.""

The Bombers play bottom placed West Coast this Saturday night.
