Monday's ANZAC Day game will be even more important than usual for Brendon Goddard.

It will be the first time that Goddard will lead the team on this significant occasion, stepping up to the main job in the absence of Jobe Watson.

The veteran midfielder is aware of the responsibility he is undertaking, holding an understanding of the importance of the occasion to not only the Club, but to the wider community.

“I’m very honoured,” Goddard said at the official launch of the ANZAC Day match.

“I think that everybody that participates on ANZAC Day in our game is very honoured to be part of not only the game but the day itself and what it means to Australians.”

A finals player who made it all the way to the Grand Final with St.Kilda, Goddard is no stranger to playing on the big stage.

ANZAC Day, for him however, is one of the most unique experiences that he has ever had the chance to participate in.

Monday’s game will be the third time Goddard has participated in the blockbuster.

As excited as he is to be standing in the middle of the MCG in front of the 90,000 strong crowd, he is also thrilled to be able to share the experience with new teammates – both young and old.

“Outside of the Grand Final, we obviously know it’s the biggest home and away game in terms of crowd and atmosphere,” Goddard said.

“It’s good for our young kids to experience that kind of feeling. It’s going to be a pretty special day with ANZAC Day and remembering those who fought and current troops as well.

“That’s one of the attractions you have coming to Essendon, I know it was one of mine.”
