Essendon’s Jason Winderlich and Courtenay Dempsey will both require surgery after MRI scans today confirmed both players had ruptured their anterior cruciate ligament.
“We had our worst fears confirmed this afternoon when the MRI results confirmed both Jason and Courtenay had sustained ACL injuries,” General manager of football operations Paul Hamilton said.
“Both players can expect to undergo surgery within the next two weeks but we will now proceed to determine what the best course of action is for both players and their longer-term futures.
“It is disappointing news for the club but particularly for Courtenay and Jason who have put in a lot of hard work over the pre-season.
“It now provides an opportunity for other players to step up and we are confident that we have the depth to be able to fill the void.”
In better injury news for the club, scans today revealed no damage to Mark McVeigh’s hand following a knock in Saturday’s game against Carlton.
“We are pleased with the results of the scans to Mark’s hand. We now expect Mark to be available to play in the much anticipated Anzac Day match next Monday,” Hamilton said.
The club will provide further updates on Winderlich and Dempsey as they come to hand.
Essendon’s Tom Bellchambers said yesterday’s brave draw against Carlton has put the team in good stead for a big ANZAC Day blockbuster against the Pies. He said his Bomber teammates showed considerable grit and resolve to eke out the draw against Carlton.
