With only seconds remaining in the term and with the ball in the Fremantle attacking half, McVeigh was awarded a free kick it. More than 100 metres from the Essendon goal and with the siren about to sound it seemed there would be no addition to the scores.
But when Matthew Pavlich ran over the mark and a 50 metre penalty was given, McVeigh was an outside chance to give the Bomber one last scoring opportunity. However being at least 65m from goal it appeared a very remote chance.
McVeigh had nothing to lose and he let loose and the result even surprised himself. ""I gave myself no chance of even getting it close, but I actually got on to it so it was alright, the boys shepherded it and it bounced through the goals,"" McVeigh recalled on Bomber Radio last night. ""It was amazing that it bounced that way, usually with a torp it bounces back into play, but it bounced through the goals.""
The Essendon players ran to McVeigh in celebration. It was a show of spirit that sent a message to Bombers fans they were serious about getting their season back track.
