Essendon VFLW duo El Chaston and Lily Bateman have been named in the 42-player squad for the 2026 VFLW Team of the Year.

The final VFLW Team of the Year, featuring 21 players, will be announced at the VFLW & VFL League Awards at Crown Casino on Monday, September 14.

For Chaston, the recognition caps another outstanding campaign in their third season with the Bombers.

The VFLW captain has been a consistent performer across the year, playing all 14 games while making an impact through the midfield and across half-back.

Chaston averaged 21 disposals, five marks, four tackles and two clearances per game, continuing their reputation as one of Essendon’s most influential players.

The nomination adds to an impressive individual record, with Chaston a two-time reigning Essendon VFLW Best and Fairest winner and a two-time VFLW Team of the Year selection in 2024 and 2025.

Bateman has also enjoyed a strong 2026 campaign, earning her place among the competition’s 42 leading players.

Now in her fourth season with Essendon after progressing through the Calder Cannons pathway, the 22-year-old defender has played every game this season.

A competitive presence in defence, Bateman has averaged 11 disposals, three marks and three tackles per game, while recording an impressive 72% disposal efficiency.

Her ability to compete fiercely in one-on-one contests and apply pressure has been a key feature of her game throughout the season.

Both Bombers will now await Monday night’s VFLW & VFL League Awards, with the final 21-player VFLW Team of the Year to be revealed on the night.
