Legendary Bomber Michael Long made stand for his people when he walked to Canberra in 2004 to confront the Prime Minister. Michael wanted to highlight the social inequities between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
This Saturday night we ask Essendon supporters – and all football supporters - to join Michael on the 2009 Long Walk.
The Long Walk is one way for Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians to come together and bring about community awareness and ultimately a better future for all of us. The Long Walk Charity is now a community partner of the Essendon Football Club. Together we aim to continue to promote awareness around key Indigenous issues and work to establish programs that create and nurture Indigenous leadership.
“I am very proud of the role Essendon has played in building bridges between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians,” Long said. “It is one of the things I respect about this Club and why it will always be home. I would love to be surrounded by a sea of people as we walk to the MCG this Saturday night.”
The Long Walk activities commence at Federation Square at 4pm on Saturday afternoon. Musical acts include The Grenadines, Rachel Wirrpanda and the Joe Geia Band. There will also be a Koorie Night Market, Traditional Indigenous Games and much more.
The Long Walk leaves Federation Square for the MCG at 5.50pm.
Essendon Football Club would like thank DESA Australia – EFC’s Indigenous Community Program Partner and proud sponsor of Dreamtime at the G and Qantas. Qantas will donate $50 for every goal scored in all eight matches this weekend to The Long Walk
