In a mammoth multi-club deal on the final day of the 2023 AFLW Trade Week, Essendon has secured the services of Premiership player Maddison Gay.

The deal, which involves 11 clubs, sees Essendon receive Pick No.37 from Adelaide and Pick No.19 and Gay from Melbourne.

The Bombers then part ways with Pick No.13, which goes to Richmond, and Pick 33, which arrives at Adelaide.

A Premiership player with the Demons in Season Seven, Gay brings a wealth of big-game prowess to the Bombers, having averaged 15 disposals per game across her past three finals outings.

The 27-year-old said she was thrilled to arrive at the NEC Hangar.

"I'm feeling very excited for a new adventure at the Bombers," Gay said.

"I'm looking forward to meeting the girls and coaching staff. I find the direction of the team really exciting.

"I'm glad the trade period is over and really looking forward to getting stuck into next season."

Initially taken by Carlton as a rookie signing ahead of the 2018 season, Gay played all seven games in her debut season and was named the club’s Rising Star winner.

Joining the Demons before the 2019 season, Gay quickly established herself as a mainstay in a squad that achieved consecutive grand final appearances in Season Six and Season Seven of the competition, winning in the latter.

Gay has averaged 13 disposals per game and booted 13 goals in her 54 career games, earning a reputation as a versatile player who can play various roles, both as a defender and an inside midfielder.

With 10 career finals matches under her belt, Gay’s experience will provide a welcome boost in leadership for the Bombers’ emerging playing list.

AFLW List and Recruiting Manager Georgia Harvey said the acquisition of Gay would fulfil needs for the Dons and strengthen their depth around the ground.

“We are really excited to welcome Maddi to the club. Her experience and leadership will be invaluable to our squad,” Harvey said.

“As an experienced player, Maddi will play an instrumental role as we continue to evolve as a whole program. Her versatility to play down back and as an inside midfielder is a key area we wanted to address during this period.”

“As a childhood Bombers supporter, we look forward to welcoming Maddi to the club.”
