David Hille (calf), Matthew Lloyd (broken arm) and Jason Laycock (knee) will certainly miss while Dean Rioli (back) remains in doubt. Dean Solomon (knee) had arthroscopic surgery recently but he ran freely at training this morning and may be a surprise starter against Melbourne.
And the selectors also have a difficult decision to make with Mark Johnson who is yet to play a practice match after undergoing a full shoulder reconstruction. His rehabilitation is complete but they will have to make a call on whether his fitness levels are where they need to be.
Essendon’s problems are compounded by the fact that Ty Zantuck will miss the opening match of the season when he serves the final match of a suspension incurred while playing with Richmond.
So Essendon’s youngsters will get an early chance. First-round draft pick Angus Monfries is a very good chance of making his AFL debut having shown some pleasing form during the practice match series. Another 2004 draftee – Paul Thomas – also looks an excellent chance of making his debut after playing some good football deep in defence.
Today's Kevin Sheedy press conference is in Bomber.tv
Kepler Bradley is a certain starter as is Brent Stanton – Kevin Sheedy today saying the pair had been among the four most impressive performers for the club during the pre-season. Jason Winderlich will also push for selection while emerging ruckman Tristan Cartledge could be the ‘smokey’ as a back up for Matthew Allan in the absence of David Hille and Jason Laycock.
On a positive note, Courtney Johns resumed running this week for the first time in more than six months as he continues his fight back from a debilitating hip injury.
Sheedy's full press conference from this morning's training session is now available on Channel 3 in Bomber.tv.
