Despite a disappointing result on the road against the Dockers, Brad Scott is impressed with the intent of his young squad as they look to attack the second half of the season after the bye.
Young ruck Vigo Visentini was the 11th Don to make his debut this season as the Club fielded its third-youngest team of the last decade, with the youngster at the forefront of Scott’s praise post-game.
The rundown from Scott’s presser:
Scott on… result
We were really pleased with a lot of the game. We made some errors that we’ll keep working on and some system-based, technically-based.
You’re not going to win many games when you have an inside 50 differential like that but I thought our forwards - from the limited supply - were excellent, I thought we defended really well for the most part, certainly infinitely better than last week.
We were beaten in (stoppages). They were able to dictate around the contest more than we’d like and we’re probably at the stage where we’re putting different players through there and they’re more settled than we are right at the moment.
We’re in a difficult spot but we’re learning a lot about our group and we’re certainly going to find some players. We come out of the game disappointed but not disheartened.
I thought all in all, there’s a lot to like and look forward to.
Scott on… youngsters
Visentini was fantastic. I thought he was terrific against a really good player.
I thought he rucked and competed really well, he’s a 19-year-old playing his first game against a Premiership player. There’s big challenges in footy but probably not too many bigger than that.
For the large part of the game, we were rapt. (That) big tackle in the second quarter knocked him around a bit but he fought on really well.
I thought (May) looked really strong as well. (He and Caddy) formed a really good partnership with Peter Wright helping out, so there’s reason to be optimistic about what that looks like.
Scott on… Setterfield and Roberts’ pressure acts, signs for future
They’re the actions that we’re chasing.
That’s what we’ve got to really reward and recognise. I don’t think there’s anything I see in the group that’s a lack of effort or commitment.
We’ve got a lot of guys in their first, second, third, fourth, fifth game who are learning a system and trying to execute under AFL heat.
While it’s disappointing, this is the exciting part of coaching in my view. Hopefully they’re part of the team we want to be in the not-too-distant future.
Scott on… selection post-bye
We’ll definitely get Durham back and there’s probably five or six others that will be close.
Now we’ve got to balance, is it a risk to bring (those) five or six back all at once? We’ll assess where they’re at, all of those players will have a strong training session this weekend, they won’t have the same bye week that all the others have.
We’ve got two weeks to get them ready.
The silver lining of all this is we think there’s some players who’ve come into our team that won’t go out regardless of who comes back.
By definition, that should make us stronger.
