Jayden Nguyen will don the sash again in 2026.

The Category B Rookie penned a new contract extension this week to lock in his spot for next year, off the back of an impressive debut campaign that’s seen him feature in the Bombers’ last three games.

A product of the Club’s James Hird Academy, the 177cm defender produced solid form as a lockdown player early in 2025 via the VFL until an untimely foot stress injury but timed his return well for the back end of the season.

Nguyen made his mark as the first player in AFL history with a Vietnamese background when he debuted against Sydney interstate in round 21, becoming the Dons’ 14th debutant of the year.

Quickly highlighting his defensive capability and aggression to the Bombers faithful, Nguyen claimed two early scalps in heavily limiting the influence of star forwards Tom Papley and Tyson Stengle, before another competitive outing against the Saints in last week’s narrow loss.

A surprise packet of the Bombers’ run home this season, Nguyen is grateful to be going around next year, relishing the opportunities that have fallen at his feet in a challenging year for the Club.

“To have another year to live out my childhood dream is incredibly special,” Nguyen said.

"I was absolutely thrilled when I got the news. I'm so proud to represent this prestigious Club, and I’m already keen to put in the work and hit the ground running in 2026.

“This year, Andy McGrath and the other leaders at Essendon really took me under their wing. They have helped me grow not just as a footballer, but as a person.

“I’m beyond excited for what’s to come in 2026, and I can’t wait to run out in front of the Bomber faithful and continue making them proud."

One of many young Dons who’ve helped drive a positive culture amongst their extensive group of new players this year, Nguyen has already become something of a cult figure amongst the wider fanbase of the Club.

Essendon’s General Manager - List and Recruiting Matt Rosa emphasised Nguyen’s commitment and quality of character, another success story of the Club’s emerging NGA program.

“Jayden’s development this year as a Rookie-listed player has been fantastic to see,” Rosa said.

“He’s the type of character that leaves no stone unturned and he's made the most of every opportunity in his first season, whether that's been at senior level or otherwise. It’s also a great testament to what we’re building with our JHA program.

“It’s great to have Jayden on board again for next season and we’re excited to see where he can take himself."
