What a difference 12 months can make in the life of a footballer. This time just under a year ago, Mark Bolton got the devastating news he had been dropped from the grand final side. This forced Bolton to do a lot of soul searching and instead of throwing in the towel and giving up, he used the omission as ammunition for a solid pre-season. ""Missing out on the Grand Final last year sort of stung me a little bit through pre-season. So that probably gave me more incentive to do well this year. It was a bit of a driving force,"" Bolton said. 2002 has seen the emergence of Bolton as one of the Bombers biggest improvers and as the club heads into its fifth consecutive finals campaign - Bolton could be one of the keys to the Bombers September success.

Bolton has played 17 games this season, two less games than he had played in his previous four years at the club. The former Eastern Rangers player can't attribute his improvement in form to anything in particular, however believes spending more time out on the ground has greatly improved his confidence. Bolton has spent most of the season in defence for the Bombers, however has also spent a bit of time in the forward line and has kicked six goals. ""I like being able to run off the half-back line,"" Bolton said. At 194cm tall, Bolton also provides another ruck option for the team.

Bolton agrees the Bombers are starting to find some form at the right end of the season and the long-term injuries to key players through the season could turn out to be a positive for the club. ""The last three or four weeks have been good and even against Brisbane and Adelaide we showed some okay signs but not for a full game. We have been able to string some good games together, so it is the right end of the year to be travelling a bit better,"" Bolton said. Bolton has played one final in his career - the Preliminary final against Hawthorn in 2001 and says he is looking forward to playing in his second this Saturday against the Eagles. ""The nerves aren't too bad, mind you it is only early in the week. I am really looking forward to playing but the nerves haven't kicked in just yet,"" Bolton said.
